  • Hitzhusen to Deliver Lecture on Spirituality and Sustainability on Sept. 20 in Sylvania, OH

    The Science Alliance for Valuing the Environment, an “educational consortium for environmental concerns” affiliated with Lourdes University in Sylvania, OH, will host Dr. Greg Hitzhusen to deliver a lecture on “Spirituality and Sustainability: Hope for All Creation” at the Franciscan Center from 7:30-9:00pm on Tuesday, Sept. 20.

  • Today is registration deadline for Columbus Diocese Creation Care Conference on Oct. 8

    The Columbus Diocese is offering a day of reflection, inspiration, study, and sharing of resources to help Columbus area Catholic communities respond to Pope Francis’ environmental urgings in his recent encyclical, Laudato Si: Caring for Our Common Home. The conference: “Enlivened by Laudato Si’: We Care for our Common Home: Our practical response to care for God’s creation” will be held at the Martin De Porres Center in Columbus from 10am-2pm on Saturday, October 8.

    The conference will feature creation care team building sessions, spirituality and worship, education, sustainability information for energy savings, and advocacy to care for creation and the poor. Dr. Greg Hitzhusen of the School of Environment and Natural Resources at Ohio State will deliver a keynote address.

  • Ohio Interfaith Power and Light offers advocacy training

    Event Announcement: Ohio Interfaith Power and Light will offer Advocacy Training as part of a faith based response to climate change issues in Ohio on Saturday, October 15, 2016.

    OhIPL Director Sara Ward and Coordinator Deb Steele will be reviewing legislative policies at the state and national level with a focus on what constituents can do to advocate for laws that will better care for our collective home.

    – Help Ohio end the “freeze” on our energy efficiency & renewable power legislation

    – Learn more about the national Clean Power Plan

    – Take action at the end of the training by calling your legislator and submitting a Letter to the Editor

  • Sustainability Photo Contest

    This RESTORExchange photo contest is being brought back from the pre-COVID era, and with an added collaboration with the Sustainability Institute. It's based around the question "What does sustainability look like?" This can include sustainability in environmental justice, technology, energy, lifestyle and wellbeing, society and culture, economy and politics, and any other context where you see sustainability in action. We want to see your perspectives and show all the different places that sustainability is practiced! Winning photos will be decided by a panel of judges (yet to be determined), and the top four photos will win a prize! First place will receive $400, second place will receive $300, third place will receive $200, and an honorable mention will receive $100. Submissions will be accepted through March 15, 2023.

  • From the Ground Up: An Adult Outdoor Education Program
    AKA Our Deen is Green! for Adults

    "We are happy to announce that applications are now being accepted for From the Ground Up: An Adult Outdoor Education Program (aka Our Deen is Green! for adults). This special program, funded by a grant from the National Park Service Chesapeake Gateways Office, will begin after Ramadan, in late April 2024, and continue into spring of 2025. It is a unique opportunity to become immersed in the various facets of ecology, environmental science, sustainability and stewardship. It will include monthly classes, mostly in-person and outdoors in parks and wildlife sanctuaries in DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia, focused on specific aspects of and issues pertaining to our local region, the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.

    Classes will be led by local subject matter experts and include a variety of topics, including local plants and animals, the interconnectedness of our watershed, the challenges it’s facing, and what we can do to help. Specific classes will include:

    · An introduction to the Chesapeake Bay Watershed
    · Local herps: reptiles and amphibians
    · Monitoring stream health with benthic macroinvertebrates
    · Stream restoration and invasive plant removal
    · The importance of native plants and pollinator gardens
    · Watershed education through an interfaith lens
    · Native trees
    · Soil health
    · Environmental justice
    · Local birds and “bugs”
    · Solar power and clean energy
    · Sustainable living
    · Water-quality monitoring
    · And more!

    We are looking for 10-15 strongly committed local residents who are interested in learning about our local watershed, its needs, and what they can do to help it. Participants will be encouraged to create a long-term project or plan of action describing something they will do to support the watershed and/or encourage their families or communities to pay more attention to environmental issues.

    Program participants must be able to commit to the majority of the monthly classes. All in-person classes will take place on weekends and last 2 to 4 hours. (We will do our best to help provide transportation if necessary.)

    This entire program is being offered free of charge thanks to a National Park Service Chesapeake Gateways grant. The National Park Service Chesapeake Gateways Office (NPS Chesapeake Gateways) offers competitive grant opportunities to advance the Chesapeake Bay Initiative Act of 1998 within the full 41-million-acre Chesapeake Bay watershed. Chesapeake Gateways grants bring out familiar, untold, under-appreciated, or yet to be uncovered narratives and promote resilient communities & landscapes through tourism, sustainability, conservation & local economies throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

  • FORUM2020: Science, Spirituality, the Climate Emergency and Our Future

    Presented by The Temple of Understanding, this two-day event features over forty international speakers including Indigenous leaders, religious and spiritual visionaries, and youth environmental activists. The Forum will consist of three 30-minute panels addressing climate emergencies and action plans. The first panel is the "State of the Earth Panel" and addresses climate from different perspectives. The second is "Women in Leadership on the Environment Panel" and the third is "Intergenerational Wisdom & Our Future Panel" where action-based programs will be discussed. "Over forty international speakers will be offering their wisdom and perspectives through keynote addresses, diverse panels, inspiring prayers and sacred music at FORUM2020 online"

  • MTSO and the intersection between faith and food.

    At the Methodist Theology School in Ohio, there are several different organizations that focus on the act of sustainability and pro-environmental behaviors, one of these is the Community Food and Wellness Initiative. According to their website, their objectives included creating a stronger connection between the land, ourselves, and the community, as well as "supporting local participation in national and global food justice campaigns". The Community Food and Wellness Initiative also focuses on offering experiences to the community that will further their knowledge of the earth and food production.

  • 2023 Feast of St. Francis: The Way of Francis: Seeking Peace & Justice for All Creation

    "This year’s program is designed to assist you, your family, parish, school, diocese, religious community, or other Catholic institution learn about Catholic nonviolence, and the "Franciscan" call to seek peace and justice for all of creation. The need to answer this call has become more and more urgent, as our planet, and our most vulnerable brothers and sisters, are living the consequences of climate change and its associated economic and social disruptions. The 90-minute program enables U.S. Catholics to host in-person or virtual sessions to grow in their understanding and call to care for creation as integral to the Catholic faith through prayer, education and action."

  • Taking Down Goliath

    "It can be daunting to confront the climate crisis and move toward effective action – but there’s so much we can do together. Dayenu has developed a Jewish climate organizing training especially for young people, and it has empowered and motivated hundreds of us already.
    Join us in the new year for Taking Down Goliath, Dayenu’s signature program for people ages 18-32.
    This four-part virtual training takes place during two consecutive weeks on Monday and Wednesday evenings. The dates for Winter 2024 are January 29, January 31, February 5, and February 7. Participants should plan to attend all four sessions.
    During the first week, we’ll focus on themes of POWER and JUSTICE. In our second week together, we’ll talk about building RELATIONSHIPS and taking ACTION.
    More than 350 young people have already engaged in Taking Down Goliath. This is your chance!
    All participants who complete the course will be offered a $50 stipend.
    Dayenu is committed to racial equity and accessibility. Sephardi and Mizrahi Jews, Black and Indigenous people, people of color, people with disabilities, and LGBTQIA people are strongly encouraged to register.
