  • 7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess

    Overwhelmed by the excess in her own life, Jen Hatmaker and her family set out on a project they called “Seven.” Highlighting seven areas of excess, they committed to living a little more simply every month. Originally published in 2011 and updated in 2017, 7 has been utilized for book studies in many Christian faith communities. For those overwhelmed with the task of implementing creation care in their own lives, Hatmaker’s memoir tells of her family’s practical and faith inspired experiment.   • Podcast: Young Minds Big Questions – An Interview with Brian McLaren

    “Climate Change and Christianity – An Interview with Brian McLaren” was released on April 26, 2017, and is the first part of a two part conversation on climate change and Christianity. The interviewee, Brian McLaren is an author, speaker, activist, and public theologian. His work as a pastor led him to begin writing, and he has published numerous books on faith and Christian life.

    McLaren unpacks some of the science behind global climate change and its everyday effects for human life around the world. Looking at the dangers of a changing climate, he turns to faith as the inspiration for advocacy and change. Ultimately, McLaren attributes reluctance to accept or take action to prevent climate change, in part, to a certain kind of eschatology. He then mentions instances in which congregations, inspired by care for God’s world, made real changes to combat climate change. The podcast concludes with McLaren’s own recommendations for any Christian wanting to learn more about creation care.

  • Profile: Calvin DeWitt

    Calvin DeWitt is a scientist, speaker, activist, and author of books like Earthwise: A Guide to Hopeful Creation Care (2011) and Song of a Scientists: The Harmony of a God-Soaked Creation (2012) in addition to countless articles. He is interested especially in the intersection of faith and action on the environmental crisis. With publications dating back to the 1960s, for decades DeWitt has been a force in creation care. He is also a founder of the Evangelical Environmental Network.

  • A Prayer for Labour Day

    As Labor Day approaches, it is important to remember to relax and enjoy a day free of work. Godspace (https://godspacelight.com/about/) has offered a prayer to give thanks for the hard work of laborers and communities, and to reflect on gratitude, mercy, service, justice, and the beauty of creation through God’s work. This prayer is adapted from a prayer found on the Christ Church Ontario website.

    For Love of Lavender is an account of how Christine Sine, creator of Godspace and writer for Evangelical Environmental Network MOMS, encountered God through the beauty, fragrance, and abundance of the lavender in her garden. Reflecting on her garden informs her of God's work and calls to mind numerous bible verses, including Proverbs 27:9: The heart is delighted by the fragrance of oil and sweet perfumes, and in just the same way, the soul is sweetened by the wise counsel of a friend. Christine also mentions how to use these lessons to teach children.

    One of the most effective ways to alleviate the impact of carbon emissions on the planet is to reduce individual energy usage. Evangelical Environmental Network has created a resource guide that provides practical tips and suggestions to decrease energy output. It also includes ways to create energy efficient kits that can be distributed at churches or used as part of a mission project.

  • Evangelical Environmental Network: The Last Straw

    Up to 12 billion tons of plastic trash end up in God’s oceans. Evangelical Environmental Network (EEN) maintains that trash is an affront to the glory of God. Trash eventually ends up someplace, and that someplace belongs to God. In order to put a stop to this waste, EEN has created The Last Straw Campaign Pledge. This pledge urges individuals to decline straws at restaurants and other food/beverage establishments, and avoid purchasing for home use. Additional steps of advocacy that one can take include asking local restaurants to only provide straws when customers request them and asking elected officials at the local and state levels to phase out the use of plastic straws, and single-use plastic.

  • A Month of Gratitude

    A Month of Gratitude is a way that Christine Sine, creator of Godspace and writer for EEN Moms, is focusing on God’s abundant blessings. Instead of just making the week of Thanksgiving a gratitude week, she has decided to make October and November a season of gratitude. She offers simple ways that anyone can join her by praying, focusing, and practicing.

    The Lausanne Movement is meant to unite all evangelicals and to re-frame Christian missions in a world of political, economic, intellectual, and religious turmoil. The Lausanne Global Consultation on Creation Care and the Gospel was a gathering to build on the creation care components of the Cape Town Commitment. There were theologians, church leaders, scientists and creation care practitioners present from twenty-six different countries.

  • National Association of Evangelicals Approves Resolution on Creation Care

    On Oct. 20, 2015, the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE) announced a resolution to adopt the creation care principles of the Lausanne Cape Town Commitment. The NAE press release describes the following:

    The Lausanne Cape Town Commitment calls Christians worldwide to:

    Adopt lifestyles that renounce habits of consumption that are destructive or polluting;
    Exert legitimate means to persuade governments to put moral imperatives about political expediency on issues of environmental destruction and potential climate change; and
    Recognize and encourage the missional calling both of (i) Christians who engage in the proper use of the earth’s resources for human need and welfare through agriculture, industry and medicine, and (ii) Christians who engage in the protection and restoration of the earth’s habitats and species through conservation and advocacy. Both share the same goal for both serve the same Creator, Provider and Redeemer.
    This resolution signals a strong commitment from the NAE, a member organization of Evangelical groups representing approximately 30 million Americans, and it follows from the principles outlined in an NAE report from 2011, Loving the Least of These: Addressing a Changing Environment.

    The NAE’s position on care of creation adds another significant voice to the examples of environmental statements from religious communities in 2015, alongside the Pope’s encyclical, Laudato Si’ and many others

  • Church World Service to Withdraw from Paris Climate Agreement

    Church World Service released a statement after the announcement that the United Stated will withdraw from the Paris agreement: “CWS strongly condemns President Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement. Coming at a time when the world is facing its largest humanitarian and refugee crisis since World War II, this decision will directly impact impoverished and vulnerable communities around the world and in the United States that are already facing the consequences of a changing climate.”
